Foreigners who are spouses or children of Vietnamese people living abroad or Vietnamese citizens will be exempted from visas when entering Vietnam.

1. To get visa exemption, foreigners must:

- Have a valid passport or international travel document valid for at least 1 year;

- Have documents proving that they are the spouses or children of Vietnamese residing abroad or of Vietnamese citizens;

- Not in the cases of not allowing entry and suspending exit.

2. Benefits Of 5-Year Vietnam Visa Exemption

Being granted a 5-year visa exemption, you can enjoy the best among these included:

- No visa required to travel to Vietnam within 5 years: Once you can obtain such visa exemption, there is no need to apply for a Vietnam visa again. For each entry, you are permitted to continuously stay for 180 days, however.

- Saving visa cost: you definitely spend a huge amount of money to apply for your short-term visas within the period of 5 years. Therefore, paying once time for such type of visa exemption is cheaper option for those are qualified to get it.

3. Competent authorities to issue visa exemption certificates:

If you are exempt from a visa, you can apply at:

-       The visa authority of Vietnam is located abroad;

-       Vietnam immigration department.

4. Forms of certificate of visa exemption:

There are 2 forms of certificate of visa exemption:

- Sticker: The certificate of visa exemption is affixed to the foreign passports of overseas Vietnamese and foreigners used to enter Vietnam.

- Notebook: Certificate of visa exemption for overseas Vietnamese includes permanent residence certificates issued by foreign countries and passport holders of countries and territories with which Vietnam has no diplomatic relations.

5. The validity period of the certificate of visa exemption:

The visa exemption certificate is valid for a maximum period of not more than 5 years and is shorter than the expiry date of the passport or valid international travel document of the grantee for at least 6 months.

6. The duration of temporary stay under the 5-year visa exemption certificate:

•      If the visa exemption certificate is valid for more than 6 months:

-       On each entry, the holder of a visa exemption certificate is allowed to stay for 180 days,

-     If there is a need to continue to stay in Vietnam, foreigners will be considered for an extension of temporary residence when there is a guarantee and a good reason, each extension is valid for up to 180 days (or equal to the remaining period of the visa exemption certificate).

•      If the visa exemption certificate is valid for less than 6 months, the temporary stay period will be equal to the validity of the visa exemption certificate and cannot be extended.

SOME FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

1.    Can children under 14 years old get a visa exemption certificate?

-       Yes, if they meet the conditions to be granted a visa exemption certificate.

For children under 14 years old traveling with a parent's passport, the visa exemption certificate is issued together with the parent's passport.

2.    What if I want to apply for a 5-year visa, but my foreign passport is valid for less than 5 years?

In this case, you should apply for your passport again and then apply for a certificate of visa exemption. If you still use this passport to apply, you may still be issued a visa exemption certificate but the validity of this document will be 6 months shorter than your passport's validity.
